Marketing An Alternate Reality

Filed under: Uncategorized — daytwitter @ 1:21 am

I wish there was a song “I’m so bored with the Left” by The Clash. Their fixation with changing the US to an earthly utopia has put the US partially in this predicament. The power of marketing and the New Media has supported and continues to nurture the belief that the US can do nothing right. Niklas Ekdal points out some of the positives amidst the never ending negatives dispensed by the arbitrators of what is wrong with the US.

I believe that starting Jan 2009 the criticism will be blunted if not entirely quieted as if in one day all of the ills were cured by a miracle treatment. It is like deja vu all over again as the gates of Camelot open to the new earthly ‘progressive” utopia. The inhabitants of the old era are supposed to join the movement for the good of the world. Descension will not be tolerated. First offenses will be treated with a gentle reminder while second offenses will be dealt with sternly. Only good thoughts are allowed from this time forward, good times are here again.

Only the good of the Carter and Clinton years will flow from the lips and pens of the Camelotians. The horrors of the Reagan and Bushs’ years will be the underlying reason that it took so long to build the foundation of utopia or why the true vision of Camelot will take longer than promised. Declining health care with longer queue’s, fuel shortages, declining purchasing power of dollar, loses to terrorists, and declining quality of life will be part of the sacrifice of attaining the utopia.

I think is time to get a sugared drink, and ponder the future. That is if sugar drinks are not outlawed in the name of reducing health care costs.

World schizophrenic in fixation with U.S.

World schizophrenic in fixation with U.S.

After four days at the World Economic Forum, I have only one tune in my head: “I’m so bored with the USA” by The Clash. The fixation on America is total. Maybe it’s because of the presidential election, or the financial crisis, or because all the talk about a multi-polar world was exaggerated.

Many good things come from the West – like Microsoft Word, sweet sugar drinks and freedom – but now it is the bad things that matter. The economy first:

The American credit crisis, according to the seers here, will spread to other markets and ultimately the whole world. The recession in the USA means a global decline since nobody else generates so much demand.

One of the prophets of woe, Morgan Stanley’s Asian Chief Stephen Roach, portrays the role division as completely sick:

“The USA will continue hyperconsumption and everyone else will sell things the USA doesn’t need. What kind of a world is that?”

Good question. The American shopping base at the expense of others is part of the country’s image problem. But humans must also consider why Asians have been so willing to finance the barbecue.

The Asian crisis in the 1990s taught people in rapidly developing countries not to trust their own currency and banks. The United States’ unique combination of dynamics and stability made the dollar and American state securities safe alternatives.
